As part of our series featuring local businesses, we've asked a few questions to the lovely owners of Bloom Assembly, a Vancouver-based floral studio that specializes in weddings and events. Sharing an affinity for the art of floristry, Janice and Kaitlin Wu are a sister duo that aims to execute thoughtfully curated, ethereal floral creations. Their passion is designing blooms that enrich spaces and bring people together. We are so excited to feature them on the blog, the week before we collaborate in our holiday pop-up, and we can’t wait to see how they transform the space with their gorgeous pieces!
What was the inspiration behind starting your business, and how did you choose your name (which we love!)?
Kaitlin: I always had a desire to start my own business. I was interested in starting a business with low overhead with high potential for growth. With Janice’s creativity and my abilities in business, starting a floral arranging business seemed like a great fit.
Janice: The original inspiration for me comes from my mother. She took floral arranging courses for a certification when I was younger. I remember watching her work with flowers and admiring the artistry of it all. I come from a visual arts background and I work as an illustrator as well, so I find creating in a different medium with florals to be exciting and interesting. As for our name, we wanted something that was strong and succinct. We also loved that the word ‘Assembly’ could be understood as the act of assembling, both in the sense of arranging florals and in the coming together of people, which we hope our work does!
What trends are you seeing in the floral industry these days?
Janice: Pampas grass! It’s got such a nice soft hue but it’s dramatic at the same time. I also currently love working with dried flowers, which will be available at the pop up! It’s amazing to work with flowers in their varying stages of life, in full bloom and decay, and to see how much beauty is retained even in their dried state.
Kaitlin: Dramatic designs with various textures!
What would you say is your signature floral style (or is there such a thing)?
Janice: We love experimenting with unexpected colour palettes and pairing different textures together. Perhaps it’s botanical, playful, and romantic.
Kaitlin: Agreed!
It must be so fun designing florals for so many different types of holidays and celebrations. Do you have a favourite holiday personally and/or professionally?
Janice: I’m a romantic at heart so I do love creating wedding florals and making our brides faces beam when they see their bouquet. All holidays are special but I think sometimes the best flowers are the ones you treat yourself to or the “just because” flowers you gift a friend or loved one to brighten up their day.
Kaitlin: Personally, my favourite holiday is Christmas! Professionally, I love celebrating Mother’s Day and providing customers beautiful arrangements to gift their moms.
Any exciting plans for the company in the new year?
Janice: Yes! We are really thrilled to be working with all the brides that have booked with us already in the new year and to help make their flower dreams come true! We’re also really excited to be doing more larger floral installations in the future and creating limited edition bouquets and arrangements for pop ups!
Kaitlin: We are very excited to be partnering with a couple local retail stores - keep an eye on our Instagram for announcements!
